Best Time to Kitesurf in Cape Town: A Month-by-Month Wind Guide

When is the best time to kitesurf in Cape Town? A month-by-month guide to the Cape Doctor season at Bloubergstrand, from the first October south-easters to the last sessions in March, with water temperatures, crowds and what to book.

Ask ten Cape Town kiters when the best time to visit is and you'll get ten confident answers, all different. That's because the season is long, roughly October to March, and each month has its own personality. We've been running Khaya, a kite house in Bloubergstrand, for seven seasons, so here's our take, month by month, with the pros and cons of each. (Spoiler: we have a big soft spot for the early season.)

First, how the wind works here

The wind that makes Cape Town famous is the south-easter, known locally as the Cape Doctor because it blows the city's air clean. In summer a high-pressure system parks itself in the South Atlantic and pushes wind up the coast, where it funnels between Table Mountain and the sea and roars across Table Bay. At Blouberg it arrives cross-shore to cross-onshore, which is what makes the beach so safe to ride.

The daily rhythm is very consistent. Mornings are usually calm. The wind fills in around late morning, builds through the afternoon and peaks somewhere between two and six o'clock, often at 25 to 35 knots. A cloud "tablecloth" spilling over Table Mountain is the classic sign that the Doctor is in.

The water stays cold all summer thanks to the Benguela current: expect 13 to 17°C, sometimes a touch warmer in the lagoon at Langebaan. A 4/3 wetsuit is standard all season.

October: the season wakes up

The first proper south-easters arrive, the schools reopen and the beach still feels like it belongs to the locals. You'll get a few calm or showery days mixed in, which is the perfect excuse for a hike or a wine farm, but when it blows, it blows: October afternoons can be every bit as strong as January, with a fraction of the people on the water. The water is at its coldest, so the sauna earns its keep. This is our favourite month by a mile: a wide-open beach, a buzz of anticipation as the regulars roll back in, instructors with time on their hands and the best accommodation prices of the season. If you can only pick one month, we'd quietly suggest this one.

November: consistency arrives

By November the pattern is locked in and you can expect wind on most days, still with plenty of space on the water. Late November also brings the Red Bull King of the Air waiting window (21 November to 6 December in 2026), when the world's best big-air riders descend on Kite Beach. Watching it from the sand and then riding the same spot the next day is a proper bucket-list moment. Still shoulder-season pricing at Khaya, and for beginners this is about as good as it gets: steady wind, quiet lagoons and a beach that hasn't filled up yet.

December: peak wind, peak everything

The strongest, most reliable wind of the year, with long runs of 25-knot-plus afternoons. It's also the South African summer holidays from mid-December, so the beach, restaurants and roads are at their busiest and rooms sell out well in advance. Sunset sessions at 8 pm are the reward. If you want to ride every day and love a big scene, this is the month. Peak-season rates apply.

January: more of the same

January is December without the local holiday crowds after the first week. The wind is as good as it gets, days are long and hot, and the kite community is at full strength, which makes it the easiest month to find people to ride with. It's also the month our long-stay guests are settled in and the house is at its best. Peak rates.

February: strong wind, warmer days

Still peak season, with strong south-easters and the warmest air temperatures of the year. Late February can bring the occasional lighter spell as the highs start to shift, but most weeks deliver. A great month for intermediates chasing progression, and slightly easier to book than December or January.

March: the golden shoulder

The wind eases a little, from most days to many days, and in return you get warmer water, quieter beaches and shoulder-season prices. March also has the calmest, most beautiful autumn mornings, so the no-wind days are genuinely enjoyable: hikes, wine farms, the beach. A lot of experienced riders think March is the best all-round month. We close on 1 April.

April to September: off-season

The south-easter dies down, the north-westerly winter fronts arrive and the surfers take over. There is occasional winter kiting for those who chase fronts, but it's not a kite holiday. Khaya is closed from 1 April to 1 October, and most schools close too.

The best month for...

How long should you come for?

Two weeks minimum, three if you can. Cape Town is consistent, not guaranteed: even in January a week can bring one or two calm days. A longer trip means you never have to gamble on a single forecast. A lot of guests who come "for two weeks" end up messaging us to extend, and we love those messages.

Where to base yourself

Stay within walking distance of the launch. Every kite hour you don't spend driving is an hour on the water. Khaya is eight minutes on foot from Kite Beach, with gear storage, a rinse station, pool, sauna and a crew of kiters at every level.
